I enjoyed reading this book mainly because I liked Jon. He was a great character especially at the beginning of the book. One of my favorite sequences, is when he stands up for Eliza in front of his family and some other ‘friends’ and totally shuts them down. It was a great moment. The story itself was pretty good, and made me want to keep reading so I could see how it ended. I recommend this book for someone looking for an easy read romance.
While I did like this book, I need to explain why I gave it three stars. Like I said earlier I like Jon’s character more at the beginning of the book. In this way it’s the opposite of Pride & Prejudice, where you start out hating a character, then grow to know him and like him more and more. Jon starts out saving Eliza and helping her, and he seems really cool and intriguing, then when you get to know him he’s indecisive, standoffish, and somewhat illogical. By the time the book finished, I almost wanted Eliza to leave him and go off with Nathanial, just to give the book an unexpected twist and teach that man a lesson.
The main character, Eliza: I don’t think I ever really liked her, but I never really disliked her. She did some really dumb things, but it helped move the plot along so that was fine.
****Spoiler Alert****
Half-way through the book the mystery is solved and after that point the book turns into more of a double love triangle romance story. From this point on I was waiting for the book to have some kind of twist, or find that the mystery wasn’t really solved, or something, but that never happened in a satisfying way. It followed Eliza running around New York, and then Europe then back to New York the whole time having an internal struggle with liking/loathing Jon. It seemed to drag on a little for me, but I’m also not a big fan of love triangles and this book had one for each of the main characters.
Like I said earlier, the story is good, it has some good characters in it, and it will definitely keep you turning the pages to see what will happen next. It just didn’t quite reach the 4 star status for me, but I did enjoy reading it.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
